Save Lake Urmia

Greetings,

————————————————

Save Lake Urmia

Lake Urmia Is Drying Up

Lake Urmia, the largest lake in the Middle East and one of the unique ecosystems of the world, is registered as Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and listed as a wetland of international importance under the ۱۹۷۱ Ramsar Convention.

Over the last several years, Lake Urmia has shrunk significantly and its depth has fallen by seven meters. According to UNEP report published at GEAS (February۲۰۱۲) as a result of drying the lake vase amount of salt will be exposed to wind and consequently it will impact life of ۷۶ million people living in Iran and neighbouring countries such as Iraq, Turkey and Azerbaijan.

————————————————

Act now to save the Lake Urmia: This is a petition to UNESCO, RAMSAR, Iranian Government and Shia religious leaders.

I am a concerned global citizen who call on:

۱-UNESCO, RAMSAR to pay attention to this matter and to hold Iranian government accountable for its commitments to MAB and RAMSAR.

۲-Iranian government to act fast and take swift action to save the lake from completely drying up! expedite the conserving and water transferring plans. The action plan should be launched and implemented immediately to be effective in protecting the Lake’s flora and fauna. This environmental catastrophe must be stopped before it is too late.

۳-Shia religious leaders to demand Iranian government to act responsibly on protecting the Lake Urmia. “And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers; and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two; He draweth the night as a veil over the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider.” (Holy Quran ۱۳:۳)

The recipients of this petition are listed in [2] www.change.org…. The recipients whom we believe directly or indirectly are responsible for this environmental catastrophe in front of people, generations, nation and history.
